This has been one miserable experience. From the beginning the phone system was unbelievably bad and mismanaged! The order for incoming calls was never placed (Tech Support issue 1). Then I was never informed that as soon as the Verizon phone service took over, it transferred all my incoming calls to it’s voicemail system. Therefore I never received my calls. This is a home based commercial production business… I had over 17 messages in these 3 days…. I lost 6 JOBS! Would you like to know how much that revenue was????
Clients could not reach me. do you know how I found how to get my voicemail? Your booklet arrived In The Mail on Friday Afternoon! This is day 2 of waiting for tech support to call me back to see IF this is resolved.

Then I was told that yes your phone migration program would transfer my address/contacts list. It Did Not. (Tech Support Issue 2) “Oh, I’m sorry it does not work with a mac and the Entourage mail.” Luckily I saved the .rge file and could manually type them all in. The Verizon Mail Transfer Notification NEVER worked either. None of my clients received the notification of my new email address. Again I found this out emailing a few clients that replied they were wondering why their emails were being Bounced Back To Them Undeliverable. Again, I had to manually email Every One of Them to make sure they had the new Verizon email.

How can This all be possible??? Is not, and has not, the telephone been your Primary business?

IT has been a bad experience from the onset. I had decided to speak to a Representative instead of placing my order on line, figuring I would be sure to get the services I wanted and needed. (Tech Support issue 3). I was sold a package with Basic TV (which I wanted) I asked for and was told I could get the 25/25 Internet speed and phone service bundled. I noticed quickly that my internet speed was not very fast. Step 1 was to use your “Fios Speed Checker”. Gee, it showed my 15/5…. basic speed. This was the Main Conversation with your sales Rep. It was the main point, that I get the 25/25 speed. Tech Support transferred me to billing.

35 minutes of mostly on hold while the rep and her supervisor check and reported that I could not bundle the High Speed Internet with the basic TV package. To receive it I had to Change my order and get the Extreme HD Package. Now I am paying for services I really do not need or will ever use.

Today, Saturday I am awaiting the Tech Support Team to call Me to resolve this entire Fios Phone situation.

This is the “communication” sent to Verizon. Will the person reading it understand it? The Support team(s) on the phone with accents I am not sure of, were not very helpful.

Voice Talents… do you find it hard to land a new client? Is it equally as hard to keep the ones you’ve had for… ever?
It doesn’t take much to fall behind in our cyber world.
Economy is skidding and advertisers watching the News or their favorite commentary show… IF they keep hearing how bad the economy is they start thinking “Oh, no one has money to spend, why should I advertise?? ” It’s an economic Catch 22. It’s harder in a smaller market because they don’t get the co-op money and just don’t have the capital to buy a 13 week ad campaign like the ‘big dogs’ do. Is there a solution? What’s you take?

Does it seem that you possibilities are growing smaller? Do you send emails out on a regular basis trying to catch a job, or contact an agent to help your career move forward? More and more it seems that the same 10 voices get all the Major work and that the smaller jobs are going to the online talent groups.

Ladies and Gentlemen are you Bidding for jobs? Sending in the lowest possible price? This too makes for the decline of jobs and fair prices! Everyone wants a good deal in every marketplace, it seems the old theory still holds very true. You have goods to sell…. we have the ‘voice’ to sell them. You will make a fair profit, maybe a large profit.

You do not want to spend Your money on a voice talent to sell for you, yet You ask or offer the lowest possible fee and want the best Top Shelf voice to deliver your message. Hard to fathom the logic. Searching the ‘talent bases’ for the cheapest, or should you have the budget for the Big Name Agency and using the top 10 voices of all time does not give an opportunity to an ‘unknown’ voice who may just give you a Better read, and at a better rate…. helps shrink the job possibilities for all of us.

I see you are visiting, why not add your comments and thoughts? It’s why this blog is here.
OK, so I went on a rant about copy but did not offer up any solutions… I was awaiting your thoughts. Let’s review good, easy copywriting points then…
1. Choose your message and stay with it, do not stray.

2. Why should people come to your business instead of your competitor? Better Prices, Bigger Discounts, Better after the sale service?

3. Find a Voice Talent that best suits the delivery you want. Smooth, friendly, firm or hard sell, the guy next door or a comedic entertaining read.

4. Just because you have :30 or :60 Don’t write copy Just to fill the time!
Stay with your message.

Do you know why those Mike Rowe and Sam Elliott spots work so well? They are allowed time for EXPRESSION. They can “be the copy”. How many rewrites do you think take place during their session? Allow the talent the optimum opportunity to take your word and deliver some emotion and style to them. Those artists are given scripts of 60 words or Less. 90-112 words in a :30 second commercial is an auctioneer speed read with no opportunity to caress a word or phrase. take the latest Sam Elliot Dodge Ram Truck ad, “If your not satisfied in 30 days….(2-3 Second Pause) Bring it Back”… Or Mike Rowe’s jeans spot (2-3 second pause) before the punch line, ” That’s Not my girlfriend.”

Stay with your message, prove your point, get the right Talent, don’t jam the copy with impertinent facts. 4 easy steps to authoring a great commercial.
Happy and Successful Selling to you!

I am curious. How many of us are “self employed”? We have no “company” to afford us a health insurance benefit Or IRA. Yet we get taxed very heavily, I believe. Quarterly I write a check to the IRS for nearly ONE THIRD of my income. Since becoming self employed I have had no opportunity to afford $700 per month for Health Care ($8,400 per year) let alone set something aside for a “retirement”. What about You? How have you set something up for your family and future when your voice deteriorates and your value as a Voice Talent declines?

Who IS writing your Scripts? OK. Let me begin with 2 thoughts #1: How does it persist that ‘copywriters’ don NOT understand Word Count?!! That a :30 spot should be 90 words and a :60 should be 180 words? It should be a mandatory 1st commandment of advertising. Then they wonder why you sound like a Mecum Auto Auctioneer (!!) and not like Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs/Ford Spots). Here’s the direction: ” I’d like to have you emulate Mike Rowe. A nice firm matter of fact Friendly read” as they give you a script with 112 words!!!! take into account “Just $27,999 ( pause) That’s right, $27,999″. OK lets look at that sentence “Just Twenty Seven, Nine Ninety Nine (pause) That’s right Twenty seven, Nine Ninety Nine” an easy :06, now repeat that for the Four OR FIVE vehicles they have ‘on sale’ that’s :18 or :24! Now add the Dealer name, address, website and slug lines and you are now a speed reader with NO Inflection possible. “Oh, I can read it in :28 seconds easy”. NO you Can NOT! Oh, that’s right you are reading silently in your head….Try that script again…reading ALOUD and having to Enunciate those words. Ahhhh. It’s way over :30 Now isn’t it. Point of fact. I have ALWAYS bought American cars, just the way I am. Oops. there was a few years when I was a 20 something young peckerhead who wanted a Vette but, Hah, they were WAY out of my price range, so I bought an MG to have a little cornering hot rod. One thing I promised to do and have held true ” I will Never, Never buy a Toyota”. Why? They had the most screaming, irritating commercials on the planet. SEE, advertising works!!!

Now a quick pass at point #2: Gratuitous Phrases. I believe a lot of copy comes from AE’s that work all sides of the road…meaning selling Radio, TV and Newspaper. Why else would there be gratuitous phases like ” Conveniently located on the corner of Fly By Night Avenue and Sixtieth Street”. (:04.3) OR “Your Friendly Hometown merchant in business for the last Thirty Seven years.” (another :04.6). Add that to the previous :18 or :24 and you are already at :22 or :28!!
Listen, most of our ads go to small markets of 20 – 100,000 population. The advertisers Father or even Grandfather has had that business on the same corner for over half a century. You probably go to Church with them, shop at the same grocer, buy your new couch or TV at the same store, go to the Town/Company picnic, play cards with them every Friday night…OR even live down the black from them. You know them, your Mom And Dad knows them…and your kids most likely go to school with theirs! So PLEASE STOP!! We know who they are and where their business is, we more than likely drive past it every day on the way to and from work! Put your creative skills to work and write some copy that says something special about your Client, not 75 year old advertising crutches…should we update that to say Advertising Spam?!? Be creative, be innovative, stop being lazy. I believe your Client will like it a lot better that sounding like the same old crap he hears form every other business like his.

I’ve done voice work for over 40 years and have only tried an agent a couple of times, seemed to have been lucky for a lot of years. But now, with the web full of “talents” with a computer and a couple of hundred bucks (maybe) in software … Everybody is a Voice Talent! Agents? Agents? most I’ve spoken to are either rookies or with established Agencies that the First question they ask is
“How much are you making now?” After your answer the reply is “Oh, sorry we don’t take on anybody making less than SIX Figures, but thanks for the call.”
Pal, Buddy, Chief… IF I was knocking down SIX Figures .. I wouldn’t be calling You!!!
So how do you get signed? How do you not end up at the bottom of their list of 300-500 voices? It seems their top tier of 5 voices are the same ones we’ve hears for the last 10 years. How do you make it happen? Got any magic solutions? Any Tick of the Trade up your sleeve? Let me know. I’ll kiss your aaaaaand furthermore the clients should have a chance at someone with a new read!
